26th April 2025 - DNF

Had a great block of training. Recced some of the LL100 course. Had a recce of Y3Ps with the Cavill crew. Everything was going so well. Easter in Eskdale. A few good runs leading into taper week. Y3Ps got timed out at 17miles. My first DNF and it’s a hard one to take. Setbacks should always be a learning experience. I don’t know what I take from this, which has left me despondent. I gave it my all and missed the 3:40 cutoff by a handful of seconds. The reality is that I’m not quick enough for a race like this over this terrain. It’s quite demoralising but it’s a fact. It was always going to be tight but a fail is a fail.  The question is do I come back next year for another go? Another year older. How do I get quicker? Stronger climbing? Stronger descending? It would need more time in the mountains and I’m not sure if I have time to give. The alternative is I let it eat away at me and never try to fix it. Probably says a lot about how I’m wired up. So 13 weeks until LL00. This fail...

2nd March 2025 - Marriotts Way Marathon

Training has been going okay. Up to 50mile per week despite Plantar Fasciitis in my right foot. Did Marriotts Way marathon this morning. 3:56:52 26.4 miles Started of Sloughbottom park, Norwich. -1degC for a chilly start. A lap of the field and we were away. It wasn’t long before the layers came off on a bright spring morning. Trail was a bit muddy and slippery all the way.  Hamstring in my right leg tightened and was on the verge of cramp from 8 miles in. Every time I pushed I could feel it so made the decision to hold pace. Good enough for sub 4hrs so all good.  Pace felt okay and only slow miles were when I stopped to fill bottles at half way or the few really claggy sections. Finished strong into Aylesham and there was a decent crowd for such a low key event. All in all a good day out.

27th December 2024

Right that’s Xmas done. Knackered after the over indulgence. Starting to see dividends with Jayson’s coaching. Groggy doggy yesterday. 42:04. 3:50 quicker than last year. The training has been fairly low volume so far. Loads of posterior chain weights, 1hr runs with 90mins long runs. Speed work is intervals and tempo. All good! Not so good is heal pain last few days. Plantar Fasciitis???

2024 Ultraman

I made the decision after Outlaw 2023 to have a break from triathlon for a while.  The endless swim bike & run training was getting to become a chore and to be honest wasn't enjoyable anymore.  My plan for 2024 was solely focussed on Ultra training. I had my last swim session October 2023 and only had one river swim in 2024.  Haven't missed it. Biking has been lower volume with one century ride this year. Running & weight training have been consistent. Race wise I did "The Lap" in 14:45, "The Lakeland Trails 50k" in 9:43 and "Lakeland 50" in 14:09. So onto now. I've entered the Lakeland 100 July 2025.  This scares me shitless! I've signed up to Jayson Cavill coaching and so far so good.  Initial focus seems to be on speed before building volume. So that's where I am now.  Hopefully I can keep documenting the journey over next 10 months. It's time to evolve.
